Windows Defender keeps alerting me to missing Base System Devices under Other Devices. There are two base devices and one unknown device. How do I find out what's missing? Shows this under events for first both base systems:

Device PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_E852&SUBSYS_04421028&REV_01\4&33a64b3b&0&02E3 requires further installation;

and this for the third one Unknown Device: Device ACPI\SMO8800\1 requires further installation.

Did repair install with in place upgrade of Windows 10 last week. Bought Vostro 3700 laptop with Win 7.

What other info needed?

Dell Update keeps requesting to install "SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools".  I select "Install Now" and it appears to install.  However a few days later (I think the next time it checks for updates) it prompts me to install it again.

Please can you help me resolve this so that the update installs correctly and thereby getting rid of the prompts.

Thanks for your help.

Reinstall Windows After SSD Upgrade

I just received my Precision 7510. I would like to replace the 500 gb hdd with a 750 gb ssd. After I complete the swap can I reinstall Windows 10 using a retail iso from MS? Or, do I have to use the recovery media from Dell? I am currently doing a test using the recovery media from Dell using the old hdd, and it is at 20% after 1.5 hours. That sounds ridiculously slow...

Makes no sense.

Extremely slow on boot, slow to load programs when in use.

Have run system analysis and passed

Ran defrag analysis  and only at 2%

Ran CC Cleaner

Very frustrating.

Dell phone support rude and unhelpful.

Now what?  Return it or is there a fix?

E7270 Throttling CPU on battery

$

Hi,

My E7270 is set to the High Performance profile in Windows 10. I have set the Max Processor State to 100% for both AC and battery.

If I run the CPUZ bench it hits 100% on AC. However on battery it only reaches 75% 2.07GHz. Same story if I use Handbrake to stress the laptop.

The CPU is a 2.6GHz i7 6600U

Why is it not reaching 100% on battery? I appreciate that will consume battery faster, but I'd like to be sure its doing the right thing before I mess with the settings.

Thanks

Inspiron Gaming 7567 - power monitor lite

Hi,

Been having a problem with my new laptop that's getting progressively more annoying.

Every so often Power Monitor Lite pops up a dialogue box that states that it does not recognise my battery & that 3rd party batteries could catch on fire. I should order a new Dell battery to fix this.

Originally this happened maybe once per day. Now it can be once per hour. It now also stacks, leaving multiple instances open in the background after I leave the system on with no activity.

Seeing as my laptop is pretty much fresh from box and has had no hardware changes made to it this is obviously wrong.

It is more frustrating that if I open Power manager Lite It shows Dell as the battery maker. The only thing on the info screen is that the program cannot establish "battery health"

I would normally remove this software as Windows perfectly good power management built in but I cannot find anything listed under add/remove - this seems to be a Win 10 thing as I have found advice for Win 8 saying it can be removed this way.

Any advice on how to remove this program or at least disable it's notifications?

cheers

How to start Win7 safe mode w/o n/w the first time?

$

How can I start Win7 in safe mode without networking when starting a Prcision 5510 for the first time?

I know how to get to the Win7 start-up options:  pressing f8 repeatedly at power-on.

But when I select Safe Mode (w/o n/w), I see the following messages after Win7 loads the essential files: "Preparing ... for the first time" followed by "Will continue setup after restarting system".

When the system restarts, I press f8 repeatedly to get the start-up option, and I select Safe Mode again.  But that just repeats the "preparing" and "continue setup" sequence followed by restarting the system again.

I don't know what would happen if I allow the system restart to proceed without pressing f8 and selecting a Safe Mode option.  I presume that Win7 would start in normal mode, which I do not want.

Is my assumption correct?

Is there a magic handshake that would permit me to start in Safe Mode (w/o n/w, preferably) for the first time?

-----

FYI, I have two intentions for starting in Safe Mode the first time.

First, I want to avoid any networking.  Actually, I believe I achieved that by disabling the WLAN device in the BIOS setup (f2 at power-on).

Second, I want to minimize changes to the bits before I have a chance to create a Recovery Image.

Unfortunately, the latter might require that I enable networking eventually in order to install the Recovery Tool.  I'll see if I can work around that.  But if I could do that in Safe Mode with networking, I expect that fewer bits would change.

(Precision 5510 ships with a Recovery Image.  But it has Win10, not Win7.  How dumb is that?!  I presume MS imposes that on Dell as part of MS's strategy to push Win10 aggressive.)

XPS 8900 Periodic Focus Switch

$

have a XPS 8900 with Windows 10 and every few hours the focus will switch from my current program to the previous program I used. This has been happening since I purchased the PC, but I am finally annoyed enough with this to try to find out what is going on. This happens whether I am at the keyboard or not.

I have a similar problem with an older XPS using Windows 8 although in that case it doesn't switch to a prior program, but just loses focus on my current program, then it automatically returns focus a few seconds later. Then a few seconds later it repeats the loss and return of focus. Then nothing happens again for a few hours. I made a serious effort to solve this myself, with the steps listed below.

As recommended by Microsoft I disabled all non-Microsoft services through MSCONFIG. When that didn't help I removed all startup programs that weren't essential, including my anti-virus. I then went in to task scheduler looking for programs that were scheduled at the approximate interval and time when this happened. I disabled those and the focus loss still occurred.

I've seen reports of device drivers causing this problem and since both are Dell PCs, I am hoping they know if devices they include with their PCs sometimes cause problems like this.

I started a thread on this in hardware but was recommended to try this forum.

XPS 13 9350 - how to replace W10 with W8.1?

$

I have a new XPS 13 9350 - I want to replace W10 with a clean install of W8.1

I have a USB with the 8.1 install on it and i can initiate this process - however when i get to the point where i am asked where to install it, the process cannot find the SSD

I am asked  "Where do you want to install Windows?" Followed by "We couldn't find any drives". Then I have an option to "load driver". But I am not sure waht driver is needed

I did read somewhere that i should untick the 'RAID' option in BIOS which might show me the SSD

but i also read that possibly, i also need controller drivers for the chipset, however that was for a slightly different process so i need to know if that is the case.

I thinkk i have found the correct drivers here:

www.dell.com/.../DriversDetails

but clearly i want to make sure i am doing the right thing - i have a support tag but my e-mail has not yet been answered and i am keen to carry out the install.

Can someone give me a plain English step-by-step as to how to get through the rest of the process

btw i know i so need wifi drivers and i already have those on the USB.

Thanks in advance

Inspiron 3442 will restart normally, but not hard boot unless the battery is drained. If the battery is not drained, it will only boot after removing the battery. Seems like a process still runs even after shutting down. Started to happen after installing windows 10.

Dell E6440 - Plugged in - Not charging.. Desktop mode? how to disable

$

Team

I believe I have the Useless "Desktop mode" enabled.. how it happened I have no clues.

But I cant find anywhere to disable it..

My battery meter shows 56% plugged in but not charging.

I've been googling for about 4 days now and tried numerous things - all relate to Inspiron, nothing to do with Latitudes.

Ive tried checking power options, right clicking on the battery icon on toolbar, checked control panel, tried installing quickset (which wont work on this machine), I've tried everything google has to offer

I have a fresh install of Windows 10 on this laptop and installed all drivers I could find..

Any clues as to what I need to install? or where I can find this shi+ option that nobody would use?

Thanks
