Windows 10 crashes when removing usb drive

I'm dual booting my XPS 13 9343 with Ubuntu 15.10 and Windows 10. Since installing Windows 10 I have encountered an odd issue whereby the system will crash (black screen, no error) whenever I remove the usb drive. If I boot without the drive, the system crashes at the login screen. If I boot with the drive Windows runs fine until I remove it (at which point it crashes within seconds). If I boot Windows 10 in safe mode, it runs fine without the usb drive. At first I thought it was related to how I installed Windows from the usb drive but I have tried multiple usb drives and the problem persists. If I disable the usb ports via the bios, the system will crash the same as if the usb drive isn't present.

This is a clean install of Windows 10 and I have updated my drivers/bios from the dell website. No idea what to try next.

Has anyone ever encountered anything like this?

Thanks,
Clinton
