My XPS 15 (L521x) is out of warranty. Nevertheless, at the encouragement of Dell, I successfully upgraded to Windows 10. Well almost. My problem is that I can't "Create Factory Recovery Media" anymore, which is slightly disconcerting. The "Dell Backup and Recovery" software gives me no meaningful error message explaining why my attempts are unsuccessful. I've tried creating on several different USB flash drives, and USB external disk drives and the same meaningless error message occurs each time. My Googling of the problem is not very encouraging, with posters simply saying the software is unreliable. One poster said the alternative is simply downloading an ISO from Microsoft. Can anybody confirm that this is correct? How will a reinstall from an ISO know that my machine has a valid Windows license?
It would help if the Dell software wrote a meaningful error message out to a log file somewhere, giving me some clue about what the problem is. Does anyone know whether this happens?
