Windows 10 Upgrade

I made a Windows upgrade on my 64 bit Dell Inspiron 620 tower taht was a total disaster. I opted to return to my tried and trusted Windows 7. I made another attempt a few days later this time as recommended as a clean upgrade. This time Windows 10 wouldn't boot and of course I had lost Windows 7 into infinity. My Inspiron was pre-programmed with Windows 7 and I didn't receive a DVD with the delivery. After seeking advice from Microsoft they recommended I make a USB download and install using a flashdrive. After several attempts and more luck that capability success or so I thought.

It transpires that I now need to activate windows 10 at my expence, free or not free that is the question. Apparently I could obtain a copy of Windows 7 and install and start over again, more expence. Does anyone out there have a solution?
