Windows 10 install from non-working Windows 7 asks for product key.

Non-technical person here:

I have a Dell Inspiron 15R N5110 (with Windows 7 Factory install). It stopped working... wouldn’t  get to log in stage. I tried MANY times to use a repair disk, my recovery disks and restore to factory default. No luck. All self tests said hardware is fine. So I put Windows 10 on a USB and tried to load that. Amazingly everything works! Even faulty monitor is working once again. BUT it wants a Product key and will not recognize that it is an upgrade.  I have done a recovery drive just in case and a restore point on this now working laptop.

Do you think now that it is working a Factory default restore would work now, get me Win 7 then I can upgrade properly to Win 10? Obviously I am worried it will go back to the non-functioning state and get stuck there.

Advice please and thank you!
