Test Results:
Test 1: VM1 Windows 10 10130 → Windows 10162 → Windows 10240 (RTM). Creation of Recovery Drive RDVM1. Microsoft Product Activation passed.
Test 2: Latitude D820 Clean install (no 7/8.1 OEM base license) using RDVM1. Product Activation Failure. Ability to buy a Windows 10 Pro key. Microsoft Product Activation failed
Test 3: Latitude D820 Windows 10 10130 → Windows 10162 → Windows 10162 RDLatD82010162 → Restore with Recovery Drive RDLatD82010162 → Windows 10240 (RTM) → Creation of Recovery Drive RDLatD82010240cMicrosoft Product Activation passed
Test 4: Latitude D820 (after Test 3) with a new SSD. Clean install using RDVM1 and no Microsoft Account. Microsoft Product Activation passed

Installation Conclusions:

•Step 1 Activated Windows 7/8.1/10 Insider Build → Windows 10 RTM. The Device’s Hardware Profile is submitted and registered with a Microsoft Product Activation Server.
•Step 2 Windows 10 RTM Create Recovery Drive.
•Step 3 Clean Install using Recovery Drive. The Device’s Hardware Profile is resubmitted to a Microsoft Product Activation Server. If it is recalled it is automatically reactivated.

• The Recovery Drive is Edition Locked but not System Locked or Microsoft Account Locked. It gives a vanilla Windows Clean Reinstallation. Product Activation allows small changes such as SSD/HDD/RAM changes.
• Windows Insiders who had Build 10130 or earlier will upgrade to 10166 and then to RTM 10240 when logged in with a Microsoft Account. Once they have registered there device as a Windows 10 RTM device they may leave the device from the Windows Insider program. They may then create the Recovery Drive and clean install (with or without a Microsoft Account) and have an activated clean install of Windows 10 RTM. This free upgrade does not require a base Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 license so those who joined from capable systems running Windows XP and Windows Vista systems will get the free upgrade as my guides hinted away back since January 2015.
