Upgrading to a larger SSD on XPS 15 9560

Hi, I would like to clone my Toshiba SSD that came with my XPS 15 and boot the cloned drive while connected by a StarTech thunderbolt enclosure. I have a Samsung EVO 960 but because it is NVMe the StarTech enclosure wont work. I also have a Samsung EVO 850 that will work in the enclosure, so I intend to use that for the clone I boot from with the EVO 960 installed internally. Attempting this I cloned my drive using Samsung's migration software. Now I'm stuck because the bios does not recognize the clone in the StarTech enclosure connected through thunderbolt. I haven't been able to find out exactly what the problem is, can you point me in the right direction? Thanks.
