Vostro 200 Vista to Windows 10

At our church, they thought it was a good idea to start a computer lab years ago. So, they purchased 10 Dell Vostro 200's with the Windows Vista O/S. Very little use, did they have. Now, we are deciding which is best for a church with a limited budget. Do we purchase the WIndows 10 license with the hope that all will be well? Or, do we put it in our fall yard sale and start from scratch.

I appreciate any advice from the forum.

Hi guys,

I'm having an issue here. Hope you all can help me. Last month virus got up the pc.

I reset the pc using the recovery option. A month later this error pops up.

Your windows license expires on Friday 9, september 2016. Contact your system administrator to get product key. Error Code: 0x8007232B.

Due to my long working time, I can't get to call the center. Any idea to get the injected bios windows key? Because i need to manually activate it.

It is XPS Desktop 8900. Any help will be much appreciated.

Advice on "best" partition size for Win 10 OS drive

$

In the old days, Dell partitioned 60GB  for C drive with 190GB for the D drive. Though MS stated 30GB for Vista, my C drive was running out of space pretty soon. I put programs in D drive whenever possible. With Win utility files, 3rd party system files, big restore files etc, I fear using 20*2 GB for my Win10 C drive as not enough.

Plan.is to partition 100GB for C drive with 900GB for the rest.

But will I be oversizing C drive with too much GB sitting there unused later?

Appreciate feedback from those using Win 10 64 bits.

Thanks.

New Dell XPS 15 9550 - can't get rid of ONE white square/checkbox on the Desktop (even if I turn off checkboxes)

On the desktop, I have a white square that doesn't appear anywhere else but on the desktop - it's as if an icon I uninstalled from the desktop left behind its checkbox.

It stays even if I go into Folder Option and uncheck "use checkboxes to select items."

It also stays even when I right click on the desktop and uncheck "view desktop icons." All the icons disappear but the white checkbox stays.

I can't click inside it as if to select it, or drag it - it's "dead".

I've also tried changing resolutions and then going back, refreshing the display, restarting, etc.

This white square doesn't appear anywhere else but on the desktop.

Can you give some ideas I haven't thought of to see how I can correct the issue? Or setting I might have set that may be causing this that I don't realize are related?

Thanks!

Windows 10 / Vostro 3500 / SpeedStep results in very slow performance

Vostro 3500 running Windows 7 without problem, then upgraded to Windows 10.

CPU maxed out at 38% regardless of Power Options.
Eventually traced to BIOS setting: SpeedStep [Enabled].

The HM57 chipset in the Vostro 3500 does not appear to be supported by the latest Intel® Chipset Device Software (INF Update Utility) but the 'Unknown Error' failure it gives is not particularly helpful. Using the latest chipset driver that does not fail to install has no effect on the problem behaviour.

Disabling SpeedStep results in normal CPU operation.

Q: Has anyone duplicated this problem on a Vostro 3500 / HM57 chipset?
Q: If so, has anyone found a 'better' solution?

Dell Shop App is malfunctioning, when it opens there is a box that is supposed to show my system,

but instead I get the dots in a circle, and a message box that says "we're sorry for the inconvenience but nothing was found . try another option. I downloaded the program from dell that identifies my system and the settings button shows this but the message box pops up repeatedly

I uninstalled dell shop, and reinstalled but still same issue.

Anybody have any ideas as to why the app which previously worked , now does not, and what to do about it?

Dell Inspiron R15 N5110 drivers on Windows 10

Hello,

With this post I would like to clarify if there is a solution for the USB 3.0 drivers on Windows 10 for my laptop? During the last two years had upgraded my laptop from windows 7, then to windows 8 and 8.1 and at latest to Windows 10. After the first upgrade to windows 10, USB 3.0 ports were working (with some faults, but at least sometimes working). Always were using the USB 3.0 driver from the dell support page for windows 7. Since the newest version of windows 10 is now installed, the driver became not compatible with windows 10. I know, that the technologies are moving always forward, but it is sad that the 4 years laptop may loose such simple funcions, when it is still may cover my needs.

Intermittently wakes up from sleep?

Hey guys, just set up a Dell Inspiron 15, 2 in 1 with Windows 10, the Intel i5 processor and 256 GB SSD. What a screamer coming from a 6 year old Toshiba with a spinner drive and a dog processor!   This new Dell really is working well and I like it a lot.  But there is still one thing that I haven't been able to figure out.

I use the laptop on and off frequently throughout the day, so I put the computer into sleep mode in-between sessions.  MOST of the time, it stays in sleep mode.  But SOME of the time, it just wakes up on its own for no apparent reason.

I use the touchpad to wake up the computer out of sleep mode (to save on the power button over time) but the touchpad has never been touched when it wakes up on its own.  I am using a Microsoft wireless 3500 mouse and I went into settings and under power management, unchecked the box which allows the mouse to wake the computer.

What am I missing?  The weird thing is that this is an intermittent problem, not solid.  Sometimes the hardest quirks to track down.

Thanks in advance for the help!

The technician I asked to remove Vista from the Inspiron 1545 and install Windows 10 in its place informs me that this is not possible because some item is missing from the hard disk. Is this correct?

How can I uninstall windows 10 and replace with windows 8.1

Hi,

Please help! I have had a inspiron 5558 64 bit laptop that is coming up to a year old. When I bought it, it came with a few upgrade to the new windows 10 which I installed as soon as I started it up for the first time. Its always been slow and I am hoping that removing windows 10 and replacing it with windows 8.1 pro will help as this was the system the laptop was designed to run.

So first question is... will it help?

Second question... How do I do this? I know I need to back up my laptop. I have an external hard drive for this. I have bought windows 8.1 online and a link has been emailed through to me with a product key. However I keep hearing something about having to reinstall drivers.... but I don't have a cd for the laptop, and don't remember if it came with one.

Any help or links to step by steps would be seriously appreciated, Dell official support have been useless and have tried charging me a bomb for a) doing it, b) for windows 8 and c) for a disk with operating systems or something on them??

Thanks in advance :)

Recovery Drive on a USB Flash Drive.

Just created a USB Flash Recovery Drive using Dell's instructions.

The instructions state to Format the drive to NTFS before starting, which I did but, on checking the contents of the drive once it had been created, it said it was in FAT32 format. Is this correct please? I'm a bit puzzled.

BitLocker (on second drive?) preventing 7510 BIOS update

$

I have a Precision Mobile Workstation 7510 running WIndows 10 with two drives. I have Bitlocker enabled on both drives.

Dell Command Update recently notified me of a BIOS update but warned me that I must suspend BitLocker protection to perform the update.

I suspended BitLocker on the OS drive, but it appears that Windows 10 does not allow me to suspend BitLocker on the second drive. My only option to turn BitLocker off on the secondary drive is to do a full volume decryption, which takes hours (it's a 2GB drive).

Turning BitLocker off on the OS drive does not seem to convince Dell Command Update that things are ready for the update. I suspect that it is the fact BitLocker is still enabled on the secondary drive that is causing Dell Command Update to balk.

So, questions:

1) Am I deducing the problem correctly? Is it the fact that the secondary drive has BitLocker still enabled that is stopping Dell Command Update from updating?

2) Is there any way to convince Dell Command Update to proceed with the update?

3) If I manually install the update (bypassing Dell Command Update) without completely disabling BitLocker on the secondary drive, will there be any adverse effects (such as being unable to access data on my secondary drive)?

4) Is there a way to get around #3 without completely decrypting and then later re-encrypting the secondary drive? Can I remove it from my computer while the BIOS update runs and add it back later fir a seamless transition? Or can I save the recovery key to the secondary drive somewhere and use it to access the drive after the update and change/fix the recovery key without a full decrypt/encrypt process?

Thanks. Screenshot attached.

Cannot (re)activate Windows 10 Home on XPS 15 9550

$

I bought a refurbished XPS 15 9550 from UK, the 4K with 1GB HDD version.

When I received it, Windows 10 Home edition was pre installed, I made the initial configurations like language, updates, etc. The initial Windows 10 Home from HDD was activated. But, it was slow because of the HDD, and it was an older version of Windows 10, the laptop being manufactured on January 2016.

Now, after 2 days I replaced the HDD with a SSD and made a clean install of Windows 10 Home Anniversary Edition created with Media Creation Tool.

The problem is that with this version of Windows 10, I cannot activate it again. It says the key for the product cannot be used to activate this version of Windows.

So, even the computer was previously activated, and I changed only HDD with SSD, Windows 10 refuses to reactivate. Maybe because of version change.

I cannot get back the original HDD, I already took it out and formatted it to use in external rack.

What I have tried so far, without success :

1. A few chat sessions with Microsoft Support - they remote controlled my notebook and tried to extract some product key to use in Windows Activation- no success. They tried a few methods and scripts to do that. They recommended me to contact Dell support.

2. I even tried myself to use various utilities to extract product key from BIOS, no success - the product keys I was getting were not working for activation.

3. I downloaded the Dell Windows Recovery Image recommended based on my service tag, written it and booted from a USB stick, and went with the recovery process. This should have the Windows factory image installed on my machine (don't know what version, but the edition is Home). Unfortunately, I cannot reactivate Windows 10 recovered after that. The same message about activation not available for this product key is what I'm getting.

So i think I need some personal support for this, but when I try to get to a chat session or something like that, the Dell web site redirects me to a page with a UK phone number and some links to Twitter and Facebook, to contact Dell technicians through them (?!)

I am in Eastern Europe (Romania) and I don't want to call UK for this, as a phone call could take hours and consume my limited phone plan.

Facebook link is the Dell page which I consider ridiculous, how am I supposed to contact someone for a very specific issue through a general corporate Facebook page ?

TLDR : Preinstalled Windows 10 Home on HDD, a version from January was activated. Clean install  with Windows 10 Home Anniversary on SDD refuses to activate.

Please offer a solution or a more feasible contact method.

Rebuild of Dell desktop - Windows 8.5 to Windows 10

Hi All,

I need to rebuild my Dell Desktop (approx 3 years old ) which came with Windows 8.5. Since then like most people I've upgraded to Windows 10 via the Windows upgrade option.  If I need to rebuild this, am I correct in thinking that once rebuilt with Windows 8.5 I should then at some be prompted to upgrade to Windows 10 ?

Or is there another way of doing it ? Thanks
