Alienware Alpha issues

I'm not sure that I'm in the right place for this, but a while back, my Alienware Alpha started experiencing some slight issues. They weren't anything terrible, but they still were pretty significant. What happened was one day I turned the computer on, and I found I was unable to use the Hivemind interface to launch Steam, and that the shortcuts that you could normally use with controllers were unable to be used. I don't know what went wrong, but it didn't have any severe impact on the system, it just lost some of it's functionality.

WINRETOOLS showing a drive letter ( Z: for instance)

Environment:

Inspiron 17R - 5737 under W10 since August 2015

DBR 1.9.2.8

Support Assist:  1.2.6745.47

Problem: Since a couple of days, the Recovery Environment WINRETOOLS partition is showing the drive letter Z: with Windows Explorer.

On the other side, the DISK MANAGEMENT does not show the drive Z:, it shows only DISK0 with drives OS(C:) and PERSO(E:) and CD-ROM0 with drive D:.

Since April 2014, date of the purchase of this Inspiron, under Windows 8.1 and now under Windows 10, none of the hidden partitions DBR, RE, were visible.

Why now?

How can I remove the drive letter Z: since the DISK MANAGEMENT does not show it ?

Two days ago I created a Windows 10 SYSTEM IMAGE. Could this be the cause ?

Thanks for your help.

PS: I found an old thread named "Dell assign drive letters to recovery partitions". A post was added to it by end of January 2016.

Touchscreen problem

This is just an update for my my post this morning. We have found a way around which I think will resolve this touchscreen issue. We are performing a clean install using Windows 8.1 because with Windows 8 it's asking me for the product key( which is not a problem with me, using a software which i can't remember which i was able to locate my product key).anyway with W8.1 it didn't ask me for the product key. One thing which has given me a headache yesterday was with the Bios because since I have bought this laptop, it has already made twice on Bios update. Pressing F2 while performing boot no longer exist to enter in Bios,to enter Bios I have to press and hold Shift and by mouse, click on restart on the Log in screen,Then you have to select UEFI but do not select Secure Boot otherwise your bootable USB drive or DVD drive will not boot, you have to disable secure boot but remain in UEFI.Legacy is only for 32 bit system.I t was successful our clean installation, now we have to install all the drivers,I will be giving again an update tomorrow if we have resolve the touchscreen issue.

Problem with Dell Backup and Restore program

After downloading Win10, I started having problems with "program not responding" notification.  Took computer to my computer repair guy and he had to reinstall Win 10.  He reloaded all my files and I had to reload programs. I have Dell Backup and Recovery on my external HDD.  Each time I start my computer, Dell B&R starts up and wants to perform a "recovery" of my computer.  Each time I have to disconnect my external HDD and restart my computer in order to load Win10 and my programs.  I'm avoiding restarting my computer because of this problem.  How do I resolve this problem?.  How do I delete Dell B&R from my computer?  I don't know which version of B&R I have.

For Windows 8.1/10 I get a BSOD, which displays the error: "Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We’re just collecting some info, and then we’ll restart for you. If you would like to know more, you can search online later for this error: usbvideo.sys."
Apparently usbvideo.sys is apart of the generic Microsoft webcam driver. This does not seem to be an issue on Windows 7, as it just normally installs the driver automatically. But on Windows 8.1/10 it's like it just does not recognize the webcam at all.
I know that the webcam is definitely not faulty, as I have run the on-board diagnostics where it tests every piece of hard ware in the system, and it all works, the webcam lights up and everything. So this is why i think it is a driver issue with 8.1/10, as I am actually wanting to use Windows 10.
I am really wanting to use Windows 10, tried all day yesterday trying to fix it but it's just not working.
Please, all help is appreciated as I really need this laptop for tomorrow.
Thanks.

Cannot test boot my Dell Factory Recovery Media FD - 0xc000000f.

Hi.

I am trying to perform a factory recovery test boot using my Dell Factory Recovery Media Flash Drive.
Getting this error msg:

Boot Manager:
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware of software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1.Insert your Windows installation disc and restart the computer.
2.Choose your language settings, and then click "Next".
3.Click "Repair your computer."
If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.

Status:0xc000000f

Info:Required device isn't connected or couldn't be accessed.

History:
About a month ago I created a Dell recovery media on my Seagate external hard drive using DBaR 1.8 utility. Result: I successfully booted into Dell Backup & Recovery window using this external HD.

What I have done today:
Successfully created a Dell factory Recovery Media with a flash drive using DBaR 1.8 utility.
Restarted, hitting F12. Inserted FD. Received error message (see above) after option selection.

Fixes Tried:
Recreated recovery media (for a second time) on same Flash Drive using DBaR 1.8. Result same error msg.
From Command Prompts entered /F & /R with flash drive. Result: No errors detected.
Ran sfc /scannow from command prompt on C:\. Result: No errors detected.

Notes of Interest:.
Selected option UEFI Pny USB 2.0 FD1100 as my input source.
When using Flash Drive was presented with option “Windows Setup” on Boot screen.
When using Seagate external hard drive was presented with option “My computer name” on Boot screen.

Any ideas why I can boot from my Seagate external HD into DbaR Factory screen and not with my Flash Drive?
I have no problem logging into windows 10 the normal way. Just trying to create/test a Dell Factory recovery media FD to archive instead of the external drive.

A few days ago I did a clean install of Win 7 Home Premium on a Dell Inspiron 530s Desktop.  I recently started getting the Win 10 download notification says my computer is compatible. Would it be OK to upgrade? Here's a copy of the report:

I have a inspiron 560. windows 7. last fall I got a msg from dell that I can upgrade to the greatest thing to happen to windows and install windows 10 for free, all I had to do was sign up. so I did. when it became available I installed windows 10 and now my printer quit working and it just messed my pc up big time. now I have found out that my inspiron 560 will not support windows 10. So I need to reinstall windows 7. well now I have to buy a windows 7 disc to reinstall it . I don't think this is right. there were no mention of windows 10 not working on certain models. I think Dell did this just no they could sell their reinstallation disc to everyone. Now it is costing me $40. to buy this disc, so if a million people did this, Dell stands to make millions off of this. It is just a poor set up from Dell to do this.

Windows 10 login "recovery questions", no fingerprint options

I have a laptop with a fingerprint reader on it, got it enrolled with Windows Hello, everything I read tells me I should have an option to login with my fingerprint.  Nothing on the login screen.  My "login-options" are recovery questions, password, one time password.  I can find nothing on where to reset the security questions, I assume I filled these out when I set up the system but I despise them and generally ignore what I put in there.  Password works.  Where is my fingerprint option, and where do I either get rid of or reset the "recovery questions"?

The Dell tech on the Chat told me to use the DVD and boot off of that. Now computer wont run on anything!

Says:

PXE - E61 Media test failure, check cable.

PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM No boot device found.

Clean Install

Hi, I have an XPS 9350 model, which had problems with the license, so I performed a clean install of windows 10 as advised by dell technical support. This model has a 256 samsung sm951 NVMe ssd. I was advised to set the ahci mode in the BIOS but I noticed that by default it's setted in RAID so i left it that way. Now I noticed, with a ssd benchmark software, that the write speed is very slow and so I looked for a solution and many people says that it might be related to the "write cache buffer flushing" and to disable it. Doing so I improoved very much the write speed but many suggest to not doing so for safety reasons. So my question is: is it safe to disable it? Or may the lack of performance be caused by not switching to ahci mode? And if so, is it better to clean install windows again with ahci or is it the same to use one of the methods to switch  from raid to ahci without reinstalling?

Another minor question is: is it good to let windows update all the drivers after clean install or will I loose some functionality/performance for not using dell's ones?

Thanks for your patience.

Precision 5510 Factory Image Restore fail

I purchased Precision 5510 with this option

620-AAYS: Windows 10 OS recovery USB 55YG7 Kit

following the procedure here: Reset or reinstall Windows 10 on your Dell computer

http://www.dell.com/support/Article/us/en/19/SLN297920/EN

the last section: Restore your Dell computer to the Dell factory image using recovery media

step 7 Select Factory Image Restore. fails as there is no "Factory Image Restore" option to select.

I tried various other menu options, "Reset This PC", "Advanced > System Image Recovery" all fail in different ways.

I also tried downloading a recovery image using this procedure:

Recovery Image of Microsoft Windows

http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/drivers/osiso

and

How to use the Dell Hosted Recovery Image of Microsoft Windows

http://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/19/SLN299044

the self created USB has similar directory and files structure as the 55YG7 Kit supplied with the system and fails in the same way.

Any advice on the procedure to Restore the Factory Image would be appreciated.

a problem occurred while creating the recovery drive

I have just bought Dell XPS 15 9550 this January and decided to make a recovery drive recently. The problem is that no matter what USB (of course larger than 16GB) I'm using, I just cannot get the recovery drive successfully. Every time the process ends up with sentence saying "a problem occurred while creating the recovery drive". I have installed all the available updates for my model and the problem still exists.

Is there anyway to fix the problem?

On my XPS 8300, the BD-RE (PLDS DH-8B2SH) shows as a drive but does not show up in the list of devices, and doesn't recognize information on discs (doesn't matter what type).  After spending time trying to read the disc, it just ejects and says please insert disc.  I tried to update the driver but when I do, it says the driver is already up to date.  Any ideas?

where is the search function to search the forums for my particular issue?

Windows 10 BIOS Update frozen

$

Hey guys. I think I really messed something up. I have a Dell Inspiron 15. Got it about 3 months ago. I just sat on the phone with dell a couple of days ago for 4 hours while they fixed it and now when I went to do the BIOS Update it is frozen. The Dell Tech guy said that everything would be backing up automatically but I guess that's not the case. How do I shut it down? CTRL, ALT, DEL? Will I screw it up than I already have? AmI really this tech illiterate?
